The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a privacy rule stating that Protected Health Information (PHI) identifying an individual cannot be disclosed or used, except as permitted.  As an independent contractor providing recycling services for x-ray film and associated papers that may contain PHI, ProMed strictly adheres to HIPAA’s stringent privacy policies.

The chopping and enzyme washing process ProMed employs for x-ray films completely destroys all PHI.  Likewise, the shredding and recycling processes for associated papers renders all PHI unidentifiable.

The x-ray film is cleaned of any associated papers and/or jackets; it is then shredded and chopped before the metallic coating is washed off. After this treatment of shredding and chopping PHI is unidentifiable.

The associated papers and jackets are shredded and destroyed. No personal health information is identifiable. The paper material is recycled.
